Germans split over Greek euro membership, poll indicates
Nearly half of Germans think the eurozone would be better off without Greece, according to a survey to be published in the German weekly news magazine Focus on Monday.
The poll by the Emnid institute found that 49 percent of Germans would be in favour of a Greek exit while 43 percent said they want Greece to stay in the single currency bloc.
Eight percent abstained from the poll, which was conducted on July 4 and 5 among 1,000 people.
Last month the same survey found that 46 percent of Germans supported a Greek exit.
Although Greece’s new Prime Minister Antonis Samaris was expected to breeze through a confidence vote in his three-party coalition in parliament Sunday, he will then face the tricky task of asking to renegotiate the terms of the Greek bailout agreed by EU-IMF creditors.
Greece has asked for more time to meet its reimbursement targets but must first win the confidence of auditors who are investigating the state of Greek finances before according the next slice of the bailout.
