Dendias vows to fight illegal immigration, criticizes vigilantes

Greece must clamp down on illegal immigration to improve public safety, Public Order and Citizens? Protection Minister Nikos Dendias said Sunday, while indirectly warning members of the far-right Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) party against trying to substitute the role of the police.

Speaking in Parliament Sunday, Dendias said Greece must put its detention camps for illegal immigrants into operation and renegotiate the European Union?s Dublin II treaty, quoting figures that foreigners wer implicated in more than 50 percent of killings and robberies.

However, Dendias appeared to link Golden Dawn to recent reports of violent attacks by far-right extremists on foreigners. ?The Greek state cannot accept the role of security forces being questioned or any attempt to supplant their role,? he said.
