Second Athenian contracts disease from mosquito bite
A resident of Argyroupoli in southeastern Athens became the second Greek person to contract West Nile virus this year, authorities revealed Tuesday.
A pensioner from Palaio Faliro in southern Athens was confirmed as infected on Sunday. Neither had traveled to areas considered high-risk for the potentially deadly virus, which is carried by mosquitoes.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) is reminding people to use mosquito repellent and to water plants during the day to avoid leaving standing water, which attracts the insects.
