Storm in Serres causes damage

Police and the fire service in Serres, northern Greece, were on standby on Wednesday after sudden heavy rainfall and strong winds overnight and in the early hours of the mornning caused serious damage to regional infrastructure, with trees uprooted and roads covered with branches and other debris.

Authorities were forced to close off several sections of the local road network while surfaces were cleared to make them safe enough for motorists.

Meawhile the fire service was busy responding to calls by local residents who got stuck in elevators due to a series of power cuts or whose homes or stores were flooded by the heavy rain.

With temperatures soaring above 40C in many other parts of the country, the wet weather continued in Serres but was less severe.
