Halyvourgia staff say plant to close this week

The head of the movement representing striking workers at the Halyvourgia steel plant in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, Eleni Katavati, told Skai Radio on Wednesday that the management of the plant would announce its closure within the week.

Katavati told Skai that the workers, who have been on strike for more than six months following massive pay cuts, had met with representatives from political parties to discuss their grievances.

She said that Panayiotis Lafazanis, of the leftwing opposition SYRIZA, had supported the decision by the union to keep the factory closed in spite of a court decision deeming the protracted strike action to be illegal.
