Disgraced judge to stand trial for trying to practice law

Disgraced judge Evangelos Kalousis has been released from custody after being arrested on Friday on suspicion of illegally trying act as a lawyer.

Earlier this month, the Athens Bar Association called on authorities to take action against a law firm set up by Kalousisjust a few weeks after he was released from prison.

The head of the ABA, Yiannis Adamopoulos, issued a statement claiming the firm, Kalousis and Partners, had no right to operate as former judge Evangelos Kalousis has no license to practice law.

Kalousis, who was jailed in 2009 for being a member of a trial-fixing ring, was freed in February after serving three-fifths of his sentence.

The former judge was originally given a 20-year jail sentence but this was reduced to 12 years after Kalousis appealed the verdict.

Kalousis was released on Friday pending his trial at the Athens Appeals Court. Two other lawyers who were working with the ex-judge are to be tried as well.
