Pensioner dies of West Nile virus
A 75-year-old man living in Kato Patissia, near central Athens, has become the first Greek this year to die after contracting West Nile virus, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) said on Thursday.
The unnamed man showed symptoms of the disease, which is carried by mosquitoes, and was taken to the Ippocrateio Hospital. He man developed encephalitis after being infected by the virus but also suffered from an underlying illness that was not identified by KEELPNO.
Two more Athenians are being treated for encephalitis after contracting West Nile virus.
