Coast guard intercepts cannabis shipment in Ionian Sea
A coast guard patrol off the coast of Ithaca in the southern Ionian became involved in a chase with speed boat when two men on the craft refused to stop for a routine inspection.
The two men put their craft into high gear when the coast guard patrol approached them late on Sunday, dumping parcels off the side of the boat.
The coast guards, who were joined by another patrol boat, pursued the speed boat to a beach on the nearby island of Cephalonia, where it was abandoned as the suspects eluded capture.
The packages being thrown off the suspects’ boat turned out to be cannabis, with more of the illegal narcotic found on the abandoned vessel.
In total, authorities collected 833 kilograms of cannabis separated into 585 parcels.
