Suspected arsonist in custody

A magistrate in Athens on Monday ordered that a 40-year-old man be remanded in custody on suspicion of starting a fire on Mount Hymettus last week. The man is to be charged with arson and will be held in Korydallos Prison pending his trial.

A massive wildfire in Crete, meanwhile, was brought under control Monday after breaking out on Sunday night. The blaze burnt olive trees and other vegetation in the areas of Kato Viannos, Hondros, Keratokambs and Kastri.

Local authorities estimate that more than 150,000 olive trees were destroyed and that some homes suffered serious damage.
