Teachers to strike a day after school opens

Teachers at state schools said on Wednesday that they would walk off the job on September 12, the day after the official launch of the academic year, to protest dwindling salaries in the sector, particularly to new entrants who, they complain, are obliged to survive on ?starvation wages.?

On September 11, when schools are to open after the summer break, protesting teachers are to stage a two-hour blockade of regional education authorities across the country to protest conditions in their sector.
