Fire burns for third day as Serbian reinforcement arrives
Authorities were hoping last night that a change in the weather might help with the efforts to put out a wildfire that began on Mount Athos, northern Greece, on Wednesday and which threatened the resort of Ouranoupoli.
A team of 49 firemen from Serbia joined the effort to put out the blaze. Five water bombing airplanes and three helicopters were also taking part in the operation along with dozens of local firefighters.
As of Friday afternoon, the fire service was tackling a 3-kilometer front on the mountain. No monasteries on Mount Athos had been threatened by the blaze.
There were also wildfires yesterday in Spathovouni in Corinthia and Rapsommati in Arcadia.
