Strong bank blast causes damage in Ilion
A homemade explosive device bomb device detonated outside a branch of National Bank in the Athens neighborhood of Ilion at around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, causing damage but no injuries, police said.
The strong explosion decimated the bank’s ATM and facade and caused damage to adjacent shops and stores as well as nearby parked cars. The sound and shockwaves reportedly awoke several local residents.
Police said they found two hand grenades at the scene. The grenades, and the remnants of the explosive device were sent to forensic experts.
Meanwhile officers were seeking the two suspected perpetrators who witnesses reported seeing fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
