Police clash with garbage collectors in Athens

Riot police fired tear gas in central Athens on Wednesday after municipal trash collectors protesting spending cutbacks tried to drive garbage truck toward the main offices of the Interior Ministry.

Protesters clashed with riot police officers on and around Menandrou Street and chemicals were fired but there were no reports of injuries.

Municipal employees have called a 48-hour strike to protest the impact of reduced budgets on their salaries.
