Fire in eastern Attica damages homes
A team of 80 firefighters was battling a large forest fire in Neo Voutza, eastern Attica, on Thursday, with the flames said to have damaged homes though there were no reports of injuries.
Strong winds and high temperatures hampered the efforts of firefighters on the ground who were being aided by two water-dropping aircraft and two helicopters.
The fire reportedly broke out at around 3.30 p.m. in the area of Ai Gianni and spread quickly due to the strong winds. It was unclear whether the fire was started intentionally.
According to local authority officials, at least one house was destroyed by the fire while several others were said to have sustained damages.
Fire service officers expressed fears of the blaze spreading toward Pikermi and other areas.
