Wife of shot cleric pleads not guilty to husband’s killing

The 43-year-old wife of a Greek Orthodox priest who was shot dead earlier this week in the Peloponnesian region of Ilia Friday pleaded not guilty to the killing of the cleric.

The woman told the investigating magistrate that she had a normal life with the priest and had no reason to want him dead.

In his defense, the 41-year-old shooter, who is believed to have been the woman?s lover, said his actual intention had been to intimidate the victim.

His lawyer requested a psychiatric examination for his client. He said the man, who is married and has a 4-year-old daughter, had in the past been relieved of military service because of psychological problems.

The 52-year-old priest was buried in Athens Friday.
