Berlin dismisses idea of Nazi war crimes compensation

Germany on Friday ruled out the possibility of paying Greece money in reparations for Nazi war crimes, adding that no official discussion has taken place on the issue.

?The federal government assumes that after several decades the question of reparations has lost its relevance,? said Martin Schaefer, a spokesman for German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. He said he was not aware of any official bilateral meeting where the topic has been raised.

The government in Athens last week said it had appointed a panel to determine whether Berlin might still owe Greece any money, which past estimates have put at around 5.7 billion euros.
