Police arrest three on blackmail charges

Police in Thessaloniki on Monday arrested three suspects on charges of blackmailing a 35-year-old man from Kalamata in the Peloponnese.

The man had recently lodged a complaint with local police, alleging that his wife had been kidnapped. He then received a phone call from two unknown men who asked for 5,000 euros to disclose his wife?s whereabouts. He reported the incident to the police, who arrested three suspects, one a Pakistani national, after they accepted marked banknotes.

During a search, police found the 35-year-old man?s wife in a Gypsy settlement in the village of Ergochori, central Macedonia.

The woman told the police she had left her husband to live with a man from Pakistan. Police were still searching for the latter last night.
