Prosecutors order full probe into list of depositors at HSBC
Financial prosecutors Grigoris Peponis and Spyros Mouzakitis on Friday ordered the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) to conduct a full investigation into the list of about 2,000 Greeks who appear to have major deposit accounts in a HSBC branch in Geneva, Switzerland.
The list was submitted to the financial prosecutors by SDOE chief Stelios Stasinopoulos on Wedensday.
On Friday, Stasinopoulos also submitted to Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Nikolaos Pantelis a report regarding the names of politicians and public officials who appeared to be on the list.
Meanwhile, another list allegedly showcasing the names of 36 politicians who were being investigated for illegal earnings, does not exist in the form of an «official document,» according to the SDOE chief.
Stasinopoulos’s statement came in response to a question submitted by New Democracy MP and former Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis, whose name figures on the list.
According to Stasinopoulos, the list was illegaly leaked and this was being investigated.
On Thursday, former Deputy Interior Minister Leonidas Tzanis, whose name was also on the list of politicians and public officials being probed was found dead at his home in Volos in an apparent suicide.
