Small fraction of debts to state collected
Greek authorities collected just 19 million euros out of a total of 13 billion euros in outstanding debts to the state between May and September of this year, according to a document submitted to Parliament by Deputy Finance Minister Giorgos Mavrayanis in response to a question by conservative New Democracy MP Yiannis Michelakis.
Mavrayanis informed Michelakis however that data is being cross-checked to determine whether the 1,500 biggest debtors include private individuals or companies — from a list submitted to Parliament last year — who transfered large sums abroad or are owners of expensive properties in the United Kingdom.
According to Michelakis, authorities have yet to take the appropriate legal action against wealthy entrepreneurs who owe large sums to the state.
