Would-be metal thief crushed to death by roof

Police in Halkidiki, northern Greece, on Friday were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 47-year-old Bulgarian national who died after being crushed by the roof of a makeshift building on the site of an abandoned metalworks plant near the village of Vavdos on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the man had used a welding torch to try to remove the metal rods inside the columns supporting the building, prompting the roof to collapse.

A 54-year-old compatriot who had accompanied him managed to emerge unscathed.
