Police deport more migrants

Police said on Friday that another 58 undocumented immigrants had been deported on a series of charter flights from Athens International Airport late on Thursday.

Of the migrants repatriated, 29 are Bangladeshis, 26 Chinese, one Iraqi, one Egyptian and one Lebanese.

The charter flights to Dhaka, Shanghai, Erbil, Cairo and Beirut are subsidized by European Union funding set aside to help Greece crack down on illegal immigration.

Greece has requested more help from the EU — in terms of funding and changes to EU laws — to staunch a relentless tide of migrants heading for Western Europe via Greece.
