Prosecutor seeks details on Greek cash at Jersey bank

Financial prosecutor Grigoris Peponis has asked the Finance Ministry to request from British authorities a list of some 8,500 people with accounts at the HSBC branch of the Channel Island tax haven of Jersey after British press reports indicated that the list includes nearly 100 Greek account-holders.

The prosecutor’s aim is to establish whether there are indeed any Greek citizens on the list and whether they should be investigated for possible tax evasion or money-laundering charges.

Greek authorities are still awaiting the original version of the so-called Lagarde list, a list of some 2,000 Greeks said to have accounts at HSBC in Geneva, which was given to former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou in 2010 by Christine Lagarde, then his French counterpart.
