Coalition settles on candidates for key public sector posts

The three parties in the coalition government appear to have arrived at their decisions regarding the candidates that will be appointed to management positions at public organizations and enterprises.

The choices reflect not only the political balance in the coalition but also are in keeping with the established practice of appointing former parliamentary candidates, MPs and ministers. All three parties – New Democracy, PASOK and Democratic Left – will have some of their candidate choices appointed to positions at the helms of institutions including the Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) and the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET).

However, there will not be a full sweep of old personnel. Kathimerini understands that Rovertos Spyropoulos (photo) will continue as the head of IKA, Greece’s main social security fund, and Ilias Kikilias will remain as the director of the OAED manpower organization.

Meanwhile, a meeting on Thursday between Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis, Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras and some of the country’s top judges failed to result in any agreement over the dispute about their wages.

For some three months, judges have been protesting salary reductions, leading to serious delays. Almost 30,000 cases have been postponed by judges at administrative courts.
