Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios, the Istanbul-based spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, attends a memorial service yesterday at the World War II Jewish Holocaust monument in Thessaloniki. Some 55,000 members of the city’s once-flourishing Jewish community died in German concentration camps after being deported in 1943. Vartholomaios was in Thessaloniki for a summit with Jewish religious leaders.
