Benefits being slashed for Parliament

Speaker Evangelos Meimarakis said on Thursday that there would be further reductions to Parliament’s budget, with MPs’ expenses coming in for a new round of cuts. He said deputies would receive 75 instead of 150 euros for appearing on committees and that expenses covering such things as office and transport costs would be reduced by up to 25 percent.

From next year, lawmakers will also see a reduction of about 40 percent in the funding available for hiring assistants.

Meimarakis said that overtime and travel expenses for parliamentary employees would also be slashed.
