Former Times correspondent in Athens, Mario Modiano, dies at 86

Mario Modiano, who was the Athens correspondent for The Times for 38 years, has died at the age of 86.

Modiano was a well-known chronicler of some of the key moments of Greek history, such as the military dictatorship, the restoration of democracy and the separation of Cyprus.

He also worked with the BBC World Service.

Modiano retired in 1990 and spent 10 years researching and writing a book about his family, a long line of Rabbis who lived in Thessaloniki since 1570, called “Hamehune Modillano – The Genealogical Story of the Modiano Family from 1570 to our Days”.
