New rail travel deals are attracting interest

Some 20 schools have already signed up for a new promotional scheme launched by national railway operator TrainOSE in order to drum up new business.

TrainOSE has been running a campaign for the past few months to attract school field trips to different parts of the country by offering sizable discounts. So far, the campaign has secured around 20 groups of between 70-100 high-school students who will be traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki in December. The company is planning to increase its business with school groups by also offering special package deals for other big holidays, such as Easter.

Another scheme that is attracting the interest of travel agents abroad concerns package deals for thematic tours of Greece. One of the packages that is already beginning to sell is a five-day train trip tailored to railway fan clubs from around Europe that will take them through the history of rail travel in Greece.

Other tours in this scheme are of a regional nature, such as a recent trip around the Peloponnese that was attended by 136 people.

TrainOSE, meanwhile, has also reached out to businesses around Greece with a view to offering packages such as a train ride to Halkida with a a meal at a discount or reduced admission to a number of Athens museums for passengers purchasing the one-day excursion package.
