Another bronze bust targeted by thieves
Unidentified vandals on Wednesday attempted to steal a bronze bust of Elena Venizelou, wife of the late Greek statesman Eleftherios Venizelos, from outside a sports stadium in the Cretan port of Hania, according to police.
The vandals cut through the nails securing the base of the bust but were unable to remove it.
The attempted theft came after the removal of a bronze bust of Saint Luke from a local cemetery on Tuesday and the theft last weekend of a bust, also bronze, of air force pilot Costas Iliakis (photo), who was killed in 2006 while trying to intercept a Turkish overflight in the Aegean.
