Myconos officials to face criminal charges

The current mayor of Myconos Thanasis Kousathanas-Mega, former mayor Christos Veronis, two deputy mayors and six employees at the municipality’s financial department are set to face criminal charges brought against them by a magistrate investigating a case of extensive fraud on the popular Aegean Sea island.

According to the judicial probe, the municipal officials are facing charges with regard to their involvement in a large-scale tax evasion scheme carried out by certain hotel establishments operating on the popular Aegean destination and allegedly pocketing transcient occupancy taxes.

The officials are also expected to face charges over breach of faith and issuing fake documents. The officials’ activities allegedly deprived municipal coffers of over 6 million euros during the 2002-20012 period.

Meanwhile, 11 hotel owners are facing misdemeanor charges in the same case.
