PPC to levy property tax despite ruling

The Public Power Corporation will continue to levy a tax on property owners via electricity bills despite a recent court ruling that deemed this method of tax collection to be illegal, sources at PPC said on Tuesday after Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras sent the corporation’s management a letter pressing them to continue issuing the levy.

As a result the third, fourth and fifth instalments of the tax will be attached to electricity bills and sent to homeowers by March next year, the officials said. Those who do not pay the levy will have it transfered to their tax office which will collect it instead, the sources added, noting that in any case PPC would not cut the power supply of property owners.

PPC is reportedly planning to increase electricity charges by up to 30 percent early next year.
