Public transport ticket checks boosting sales, says ministry

Ticket sales on the Athens public transport system were up 5 percent in November thanks to more stringent checks to stop fare dodgers, authorities said on Monday.

The Development Ministry said that it would transfer more civil servants to the transport system to intensify checks and to ensure that there is adequate staff to man ticket booths at stations.

Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis has suggested that if a clampdown on fare dodging can help reduce the deficit of some 30 million euros the public transport system is likely to produce this year, then a rise in fares could be avoided.
