ND slams SYRIZA deputy over comments on ‘Macedonia’ name row
Coalition leader New Democracy attacked main opposition SYRIZA on Tuesday after it emerged that one of the left-wing party’s deputies had allegedly blamed Greece for the impasse in the lingering name dispute with the neighboring Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
Three weeks ago, SYRIZA MP Ioanna Gaitani reportedly told FYROM’s Nova Makedonija newspaper that “the interests of Greek capitalists” in the region are essentially to blame for the name issue.
ND’s political secretary Manolis Kefaloyiannis on Tuesday slammed Gaitani’s comments as “historically ignorant and dangerous” and called SYRIZA’s leadership to take a stand.
In a related development, Hungary’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that it will from now on use the name “Macedonia” in bilateral contacts with Skopje.
