Church opts out of Christmas collections due to economic crisis

Collection plates will not be passed around Greek churches this Christmas, the Holy Synod has decided.

The Church of Greece’s governing body sent a circular to all bishops advising them that they should not ask members of their congregation to donate money for charitable causes due to the “terrible economic circumstances” in the country.

Instead, each bishopric will be asked to contribute money for the causes the Church is supporting this Christmas.
