Brutal killer admits to torching victim

A 27-year-old man admitted on Friday to the rape and brutal murder of a 34-year-old woman in the northern city of Xanthi on Thursday, police said.

According to his testimony, the man came across Zoi Dalaklidou in the early hours of Thursday morning in the street while she had been on her way home from a Xanthi nightclub. He allegedly admitted to dragging her to the entrance of an apartment block where he raped her before striking her head several times on the ground. The suspect is reported to have said that when she failed to come to, he panicked and set fire to her.

Police said they found the man’s palm print on a car near the scene of the killing and the victim’s cell phone at his home.

The suspect was remanded in custody in 2011 after being charged with attempted rape, but was released after serving five months in pre-trial custody and being found not guilty by a court.
