Xenios Zeus detentions approached 66,000 in 2012

A total of 65,767 undocumented immigrants have been briefly detained in Athens as part of a crackdown code-named Xenios Zeus that was launched last August, with 4,145 being arrested for not being in possession of the proper residence papers, police said on Tuesday.

Another 50 people, including some Greek nationals, have been arrested for people smuggling, illegal weapons possession and on drugs charges.
