Phony cleric scamming priests arrested

A racket of fraudsters masquerading as clerics and swindling cash from unsuspecting priests in various parts of the country has been broken following the arrest of a 22-year-old suspected ring member in Corinth, police said on Friday, adding that another three warrants had been issued for alleged accomplices.

According to police, the ring members would telephone priests and the relatives of priests, pretending to be representatives of the clerics’ pension fund and asking them to pay a fee in order to secure the release of outstanding payments owed to them.

The racket managed to raise more than 10,000 euros before a suspicious would-be victim complained to police.
