A young woman in the dress of an ancient Greek priestess raises the torch which was lit from the rays of the sun concentrated by a concave mirror at the Hill of the Pnyx in Athens yesterday. The flame will travel to Ireland for the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin that will be held on June 21-30. Denis O’Brien, chairman of the Irish Special Olympic Summer Games, attended the ceremony on the Pnyx, ancient Athens’s assembly place, opposite the Acropolis. The Special Olympics provides year-round training and athletic competition to 1 million people with mental retardation in more than 150 countries.
