Police chief disbands Volos narcotics squad after officer’s arrest for dealing
The head of the Greek Police, Nikos Papagiannopoulos, gave orders on Wednesday for the anti-drugs squad in Volos, central Greece, to be disbanded and reformed after a second officer from the agency was arrested on suspicion of selling banned substances.
Police arrested their 45-year-old colleague after picking up two suspects who had cannabis in their possession. They identified the policeman as their supplier. A sting operation was set up to catch the officer, while a search of his home led to the seizure of 30,700 euros in cash and a handgun.
The arrest comes a few days after the head of the Volos narcotics squad was one of nine people held on suspicion of forming a drugs ring.
