Illegal loggers clear 50 hectares on slopes of Mt. Olympus

Conservation groups in Pieria, northern Greece, have reported widescale illegal logging near the mountain village of Palaios Panteleimonas on the slopes of Mount Olympus, it emerged on Friday.

The unidentified loggers have cleared an area of more than 50 hectares of trees which could cause soil corrosion, according to conservationists who have lodged complaints with local forestry authorities and police.

Just over a year ago, two forestry employees in Katerini, near Thessaloniki, were hospitalized after being attacked by a gang of illegal loggers bearing iron bars.

According to Environment Ministry figures, more than 2,400 tons of wood has been seized from illegal loggers in the region of Thessaly and mainland Greece.
