SYRIZA seeks legal action against Venizelos

The main leftist opposition party SYRIZA on Friday asked for judicial intervention into statements made late on Thursday in Parliament by socialist PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos according to which he had kept electronic copies of national defense plans that had been drafted during his stint as finance minister from October 2009 to June 2011.

The leftist party’s spokesperson for defense issues, Theodoris Dritsas, also called on military authorities in charge of protecting confidential state plans to investigate Venizelos’ statement.

Responding to SYRIZA’s action, PASOK issued a statement, noting that Venizelos had reacted to a hail of slanderous statements from SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras by humerously suggesting that he had informally kept copies of old documents from the Defense Ministry in order to stage a military coup against the leftist should they come to power.

“As for how the Defense Ministry operates, they needn’t worry, the exchange of documents between the military chiefs and departments with the political leadership functions according to very clear regulations,” PASOK’s statement added.
