One dead, 24 injured in northern Greece double highway smash-up

One woman has died and 24 people are being treated for varying degrees of injury following a smash-up on the Egantia Odos highway between Thessaloniki and Igoumenitsa on Tuesday morning, local media reported.

At least 28 vehicles were involved in the, which took place shortly after 8.30 a.m. during the morning rush hour after a truck veered off course in heavy fog, causing the vehicles behind it to smash into it. A few minutes later, another succession of vehicles smashed into each other while trying to drive around the original crash.

Police, fire services and paramedics were called to the scene, dislodging drivers from their badly damaged vehicles. One woman was found dead at the scene, while another 24 people, among them a pregnant woman, were rushed to hospitals in Thessaloniki and Veria for treatment. Two were reported to be in critical condition.

The road has been closed to all traffic, which is being diverted to the old national highway, as police and rescue workers continued to process the scene.
