Businessman, 52, arrested for debts to the state

A 52-year-old businessman was arrested Tuesday in Serres, northern Greece, on suspicion of owing the state just over 1 million euros.

The arrest came as Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias informed Parliament that during the first nine months of 2012, 1,124 people were detained over unpaid taxes.

The combined amount the suspects owed came to 1.55 billion euros.

Dendias also revealed that another 202 arrests were not made because the people concerned had begun settling their tax arrears by paying a combined total of 60 million euros.
