Maroussi shopping center evacuated after bomb threat
Police evacuated shoppers and employees from a small shopping center in Maroussi, northern Athens, on Friday after an anonymous caller telephoned police shortly before noon to warn that a device had been planted on the premises and would go off within 40 minutes.
The deadline passed without an explosion in the Aithrio center and police said no suspicious devices had been found.
The apparent hoax followed last Sunday’s bombing at The Mall in Maroussi which resulted in the light injury of two private security guards. The responsibility for that attack was claimed on Thursday by a partnership of two unknown anarchist groups, Wild Freedom and Instigators of Social Explosions. Police have been examining a nine-page proclamation uploaded onto the Internet on Thursday to determine the authenticity of the claim.
