Laganas residents protest after area is swept with trash

Zakynthos residents on Monday occupied a waste processing plant near the resort of Laganas after heavy rainfall swept tons of garbage from the site into the surrounding area.

Led by municipal councilors, the residents called for an immediate cleanup of the area, which is a popular tourist resort during the summer months as well as a key nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

Protesters said they would bring legal action against those responsible for operating the landfill.
