State to gain right to seize suspects’ money
The government plans to pass a law that will allow it to seize any money generated by corruption or other criminal activity and transfer it to state coffers.
Kathimerini understands that Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis is preparing an amendment to be attached to a draft law submitted to Parliament that will give the Finance Ministry power to appropriate money from the bank accounts of anyone who has been arrested for corruption, fraud, money laundering and other such crimes.
Until now, the law only allowed the funds to be seized once the suspects had been convicted.
