University students in UK raise money for Greek schools to pay heating bills

University students from all over the world have taken part in a soccer tournament at Leeds University to raise money so Greek schools can pay for their heating.

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonia News Agency on Monday, organizer Kyriakos Kyriakopoulos said the tournament, held on Saturday, had gone according to plan.

“We hope that this proves an inspiration to all Greeks abroad so they can become active and offer whatever they can to their homeland and those who need help,” he said.

Some 170 players and 24 teams took part in the tournament, which raised money for the Desmos NGO, which will pass they funds raised to Greek schools that have had trouble meeting their heating bills due to a rise in heating oil tax this year.
