Students protest against plan to overhaul Greek universities

Greek university students will on Thursday stage a protest against a controversial plan to overhaul the country’s higher education system that has come under fire from many academics and several politicians.

The protest rally will take place outside the Education Ministry in Athens at 12.30 p.m.

The plan, dubbed Athena, was originally scheduled to be showcased at Parliament on Thursday, but the presentation has been postponed for next week.

The scheme foresees four universities shutting down – the University of Central Greece, the University of Western Greece, the International Hellenic University and the University of Western Macedonia – and the closure of dozens of departments at universities and technical colleges that have little demand.
