Tsipras in Caracas for Chavez funeral
The leader of the main leftist opposition SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, was in Caracas on Friday for the funeral of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and met with Cuban leader Raul Castro as well as the former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva who had visited the Venezuelan capital to pay their respects.
Ahead of the funeral, which was scheduled for 11 a.m. local time or 5.30 p.m. Greek time, Venezuelan vice president Nicolas Madouro accompanied Tsipras to pay homage to the dead president whose body was on public display in an open casket.
Chavez died on Tuesday aged 58 following a long battle with cancer.
