Ex-minister accused in tax fine case

Prosecutors are investigating claims by a retired tax inspector that he was pressured by a deputy finance minister several years ago to reduce a fine that had been issued against the subsidiary of a major oil firm.

According to the allegations, the company was fined 25 million euros. The ex-official claims he was transferred from Thessaloniki’s main tax office when he failed to succumb to pressure to reduce the penalty.

The claims were submitted to financial prosecutor Grigoris Peponis, who passed the case to the first instance prosecutor in Thessaloniki.
