Greece sued over illegal landfill on Zakynthos
The European Court of Justice on Monday said that Greece has been indicted to trial over the continued operation of an illegal landfill on the Ionian island of Zakynthos, which is located on a nesting ground of the Mediterranean loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta).
The case comes after the European Commission issued Greece with several warnings regarding the dump at Kalamaki beach, a stretch of coastline protected by the Natura convention, saying it is in violation of European regulations and must be shut down.
The ECJ also issued a ruling against Greece in 2002 for failing to take adequate measures to protect its sea turtle population, which is threatened with extinction.
